What Dade City residents need to know
Pasco County is waiving residential tire disposal fees through Nov. 1 as part of its dengue response. For Dade City residents, the East Pasco Transfer Station at 9626 Handcart Road is the local drop-off site, and it is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Because Nov. 1 falls on a Sunday, Saturday, Oct. 31 is the last scheduled day to use the waiver before it ends.
Residents may bring up to four old tires, each no more than 36 inches in diameter. Tires must be separated from other trash or waste, but rims can stay attached, and the county says the site is for residential use only.
Why the county is doing this
DOH-Pasco said Sept. 28 that it was informing residents of a third locally acquired dengue case, and the health department and Pasco County Mosquito Control District are coordinating surveillance and prevention efforts. County officials say discarded tires can collect water and quickly become mosquito breeding grounds.
